About Soy Wax |
The candle industry has been revolutionized with the use of soybeans. This naturally sourced wax is virtually indistinguishable from paraffin or beeswax in appearance, and is superior in burn quality. It also provides many consumer and environmental benefits that neither paraffin nor beeswax does. While there is a lot of information about soy wax on the internet, not all of it is true. For one to be truly enlightened about the benefits of soy candles, reputable sources must be consulted.
Luminessent Candles products are crafted from the finest materials available to create truly superior candles. Each product has been formulated considering the suggestions of The Asthma Society of Canada.
Luminessent Candles are produced with EcoSoya™ candle waxes. Soy tealights and container candles that do not contain color or fragrance are made of 100% pure soy wax, and have a soft creamy appearance, richer color and a smooth flat top surface. The composition of the pillar wax blend used is 100% soybeans and carefully selected botanical oils, and < 1% triple pressed vegetable stearic acid. Molded Soy candles made with EcoSoya™ PB, such as votive candles, pillar candles, and tarts, have excellent scent throw and a creamy appearance.

Harvested soya beans are cleaned, cracked and de-hulled. The oil is extracted from the beans and is then solidified through hydrogination. |
|
Soy wax is grown and processed in the USA. There are many sources and manufacturers of soy wax, and not all are equal. Genetically modified soy, with 75-80% of American soy crops grown from genetically modified seeds, is the most common GMO in food on the market today. The most common GM soy seeds are designed to withstand the effects of herbicides, increasing crop yields. (from: http://www.medicine.mcgill.ca/mjm/issues/v07n01/orig_articles/orig_articles3.htm).
Soy Wax is produced from the oil separated from soybeans, which is purified and hydrogenated, turning the soy oil into a solid. Unlike other vegetable or soy waxes on the market, EcoSoya™ waxes are 100% vegetable, guaranteed! There are no beeswax or petroleum products hidden in it, unlike many other brands of soy wax. Depending on the blend there may be a small amount of vegetable botanical oils added to improve the performance of the waxes in candle form. These ingredients are processed under close supervision with careful regard for secrecy. Only a select few people know the actual ingredients, which have received the approval of the United States Food and Drug Administration and Kosher Certification criteria.

Soy Wax vs. Paraffin
 |
Most people do not realize that paraffin wax is a by-product of the petroleum refinement process. Soy wax is made by hydrogenating oil extracted from soy beans, which are a renewable resource, unlike fossil fuels. |
 |
Soy wax is generally softer and liquidifies quickly, but burns cleaner and cooler than paraffin wax. Since soy candles burn cooler, they last longer, giving you more burn for your buck. Cooler burning soy candles are also safer, since molten soy wax is less likely to cause blistered skin. |
 |
Both paraffin and soy candles create soot when burned. Soy wax emits a different kind of soot than paraffin (hard to see unless the candle is burned in a draft, or the wick gets long enough to produce black smoke). |
 |
Currently both paraffin and soy waxes are almost equal in cost, but paraffin prices are dependent on the oil industry, and soy wax prices are dependent on condition of soy crops. Would you rather give your voting dollars to farmers or "Big Oil"? |
Soy Wax vs. Beeswax
Beeswax (made with melted honeycomb) and bayberry have been the only healthy alternatives to paraffin for many years. Beeswax may smell nice, but it is very expensive (at least five times the price of soy wax).
Soy Wax vs. Palm Wax
While Palm wax may be considered "natural" it is not necessarily an environmentally-responsible choice. It is made from oil palm trees in Malaysia and Indonesia. South-east Asia is home to some of the world's most bio-diverse ecosystems, and the habitat and livelihood of the native people and many wildlife species are rapidly being destroyed. The demand for increasingly-popular palm oil has some people involved in the cultivation of oil palm trees destroying rainforests to plant more oil palm trees.
The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oilis an organization founded by government and industry leaders involved in palm cultivation and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to develop and define best practices for sustainable palm cultivation, and protection of the environment. Unless you can confirm your candle has been made with RSPO Certified palm wax, your voting dollars may be unknowingly contributing to rainforest destruction, loss of habitat, animal extinction, and loss of livelihood for many people in Asia.
Palm wax is made from the harvested fruit of palm trees. The fruit is sent to palm oil mills for processing, including sterilization, bunch stripping, oil extraction, oil clarification and purification. The crude palm oil made from palm kernels, which has the highest oil content of any plant, is further processed to remove the fatty acids and colouring, making food grade palm oil. The Refined palm oil then undergoes fractionation, producing Palm Olein and Palm Stearin, which can be further fractionated to obtain specialized products including Palm Waxes. The various blends of palm waxes create different crystal structures, naturally derived from the many fractions of palm oil, which are formed by the differing rate of solidification of the palm fats.
About Soy Wax Additives
Candle manufacturers are not subject to disclosing their ingredients, allowing many candles to contain harmful substances. Many candle manufacturers use generally unhealthy chemicals, to create and enhance fragrance, and to improve the quality of the color and finish. While many scented household products and cosmetics may include these chemicals, they have been shown to cause damage to many of your vital organs. Luminessent Candles products do not include synthetic fragrances, enhancers, or vybar.
Additives that may be used in Luminessent Candles products are:
- Triple Pressed Vegetable Stearic Acid - an organic, fatty acid that comes from vegetable fats & oils. Prolongs burn time, and adds hardness and opacity to molded soy candles. Soy Pillar Candles may be requested without vegetable stearic acid.
- Candle Dye - all styles of soy candles from Luminessent Candles are available dye-free.
- UV inhibitor - added to colored candles to prevent the colour from fading. Dyed soy candles may be requested without UV inhibitor.
