Soy Candles Safety & Burning Tips
Candles are safe products, but may become hazardous when used improperly or in an unsafe manner. National fire safety agencies report that the bulk of candle fire incidents in the United States are due to consumer inattention to basic fire safety or to the misuse of candles.
Health Canada mulls warning label to trim candle risk
Federal officials and fire prevention experts in Canada are considering new regulations to stem an increase in fatal fires associated with candles. When the government first commissioned focus groups to look at the issue of warning labels for candles, many thought the idea was "silly." But they changed their minds after they learned that candle-related fires, injuries, and deaths are on the rise across Canada. The number of candle-caused fires in Alberta doubled between 1990 and 1999, causing 723 fires, with ten deaths, 168 injuries, and more than $12 million in damage. In Ontario, such fires increased by 47 percent between 1995 and 2001, with 1,400 residential fires, 20 deaths, and 187 injuries. The increases were linked with an upward trend in candle sales. "It's probably the fastest-growing cause of fires in residential locations," said Sean Tracey, the Canadian manager of the U.S.-based National Fire Protection Association. "There's a major marketing effort with regards to candles. You see them a lot on television design shows... Unfortunately, people have forgotten the safe candle practices that our parents and generations before might have followed," he said. Health Canada is considering the new candle regulations under the federal Hazardous Products Act, in part because U.S. regulators are considering a similar move, according to Rene Bergeron, a Health Canada spokeswoman.

Keep all lit candles burning within sight, out of reach of children and pets, and on a stable, heat resistant surface.
Please act responsibly with fire and educate your friends and family about the safe and proper methods of burning soy candles.
Luminessent Candles assumes no responsibility for injury, damage, or loss arising from the use of their soy wax products, however caused.
General Soy Candle Safety and Burning Tips: |
People who have allergies to soy, or any added essential oils should not be exposed to these candles when lit. |
Never leave burning candles unattended. Always keep a burning candle within sight, in a well ventilated room. Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep. |
Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, flammable decorations, etc. |
Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Do not place lighted candles where they can be knocked over. |
Trim candlewicks to ¼" each time before burning. Long or crooked wicks cause uneven burning and dripping. |
Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents and air currents. This will help prevent rapid, uneven burning, smoking and excessive dripping. Drafts can also blow lightweight curtains or papers into the flame where they could catch fire. Ceiling fans can cause drafts. |
Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times to prevent flare ups. |
After a maximum of four hours extinguish the flame and allow it to cool. Trim the wick to ¼" and relight if desired. |
If black smoke or soot is observed, extinguish the candle immediately. This is caused by allowing the wick to become too long, or burning the candle in a drafty area. |
Do not extinguish candles with water. The water can cause the hot wax to spatter and can cause glass containers to break. One of the safest ways to extinguish a candle is to use a candle snuffer, to help prevent spattering. |
Flashlights and other battery-powered lights are much safer light sources than candles during a power failure. |
Never use a candle as light when you go into a closet to look for things. |
Never use a candle for light when fueling equipment such as a lantern or kerosene heater.

Soy Votive and Jar Candle Safety and Burning Tips: |
Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. The holder should be heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax. Place the candleholder only on stable, heat-resistant surfaces. |
Always burn votives in appropriate votive holders, never freestanding. Our votives use self-centering wick tabs for safety. |
Never touch or move a votive or container candle when the wax is in liquid form. The container can get extremely hot. Handle with care. |
Do not light candle in a glass container that is scratched or cracked, as it could explode. |
Burn candles for at least two to three hours at a time for uniform consumption. |
Never close the lid on a burning or warm candle. |
Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the holder or container, or if all the wax in the bottom of the container becomes melted. It is normal for some wax to remain in the jar. |
For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when ½" of wax remains in the bottom of the container. This will also help prevent possible heat damage to the counter/surface and prevent glass containers from cracking or breaking.

Luminessent Soy Tarts Safety and Usage Tips: |
Use only in well ventilated potpourri pots with an unscented tealight candle as the heat source. |
Never use in electric potpourri pots, as they may overheat the wax. |
Do not leave the candle lit for more than 30 minutes at any one time. |
Ensure bowl does not dry out while the tealight is lit. |
Keep face away from the tart burner while burning. |
Always begin with a dry and clean bowl free of debris. |
Never add water to wax, especially when heated. |
Do not add (flammable) synthetic fragrance or perfume oils intended for use on the skin. |
Always stand the tart burner on a heat-resistant, level and firm surface. |
Do not place tart burner near children, animals or flammable objects. |
Never leave the lit candle unattended as it can flare up if dust or an insect enters the flame. |
Tart burners remain hot for several minutes after the candle has been extinguished. Do NOT touch. |
To prevent overheating, only use unscented, metal-encased tealights. |
Medical advice should be sought if wax is accidentally swallowed.

Soy Pillar Candle Safety and Burning Tips: |
For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a pillar candle when 2" of wax remains. This will also help prevent possible heat damage to the counter/surface. |
Extinguish pillar candles if the wax pool approaches ¼" from the candle's outer edge, allow it to cool, trim the wick to ¼" and relight if desired. |
Candles should be placed at least three inches apart from one another. This is to be sure they don't melt one another, or create their own drafts that will cause the candles to burn improperly. |
Do not place dyed pillar candles on any surface that may stain (wood, fabric, or plastic) as the color will transfer from solid wax. Use a candle plate with raised sides or a glass hurricane candleholder to contain any spilled wax in the event of a leak. Dispose of the candle when it burns down to one inch of the base. |
If you notice a white film forming on the outer surface of the candle, it may be polished away using an old piece of nylon stocking. Try to avoid any folds or seams in the nylon as it may mar the surface of the candle. |
If your soy pillar candle starts to crack on the edge, blow it out and let it set. |
If your soy pillar starts to bulge around the level of the melting pool, or melts unevenly around the top, gently 'hug' the shell inward to promote complete wax consumption on subsequent burns. The top of the candle may be carefully trimmed away with a gently warmed knife.
