When Her Happy Birthday Lights Your Candle...Forget About The Cake. I came across this practice recording from my days as a classic rock keyboard player (before I took up guitar and got more into blues & jazz). Our early 1990s band of college misfits did mostly covers, but had just started working up some prog rock & folk originals before splitting up. "Surprise Party" was an attempt to develop our own voice as a sort of Jethro Tull meets ELP sound. A few friends knew about the song back then, but otherwise, it has never been released or played in public before now. Of course, I was never going to play as well as Keith Emerson or write lyrics like Ian Anderson, yet in listening to this again, I wondered if we might have eventually been a fairly decent group, had we stayed with it. Maybe this uncertainty about choices can be expressed better later on in a blues tune. I guess I'll never know for sure if something good would've come of it with a little more commitment, or if we were just another Mickey Mouse outfit that did well in moving on. Not that there's anything wrong with cartoon characters, especially those old public domain copies of Popeye, Tom & Jerry, Little Red Riding Hood, and Betty Boop, which you can cut and paste (along with a few seconds of anonymous party footage) into a humorous mash-up.
