The Smart Candle is a battery powered device using Light Emitting Diodes to simulate a large votive candle. It uses two AA batteries, which means that you can use your own rechargeable batteries when the included ones run down. That will likely be a long time, as the advertised battery life is 250 hours. There is a switch on the bottom to turn it on and off -- there is no timer, and no photocell to turn it on and off at dusk/dawn. The unit is not waterproof, so if you use it outside, it will need protection from the rain.

The LED produces a bright, flickering, golden yellow flame. It is not the light yellow or orange color of the cheap units you see in stores around Halloween; this is a warm, golden yellow color that closely (but not exactly) approximates a real candle flame. And it is bright -- you can actually read by the light. The flickering, while not truly random, is sufficiently varied that you don't notice the pattern unless you purposefully look for it. It is not an on/off flicker, but a dim/bright variation -- it does not flash on and off like cheaper units.

The main advantage of LED candles is that they produce no heat, and present no fire hazard. That is very important if you have cats, small children, or are prone to clumsiness. Burning your house down, or setting your beloved furry friend on fire, is no way to end a meditation or moon rite, and starting a forest fire is definitely lacking in respect for nature. There is no molten wax to spill, and no odor. The wind cannot blow them out, and rain cannot drown them, though as I said, if used outside in bad weather they will need moisture protection. Safety wise, LED candles have it all over the real thing.

The one problem with them is that colors do not appear normal when viewed by LED light. This is because incandescent light sources, such as electric filament bulbs and candles, emit a broad spectrum of light, while LEDs are monochromatic (or very nearly so), meaning, they emit only one color. If you look at a Tarot card under ordinary candle light, for example, even though the yellow-orange color of the flame dominates, you still see the reds, greens, and blues. This is not true with an LED; they emit only one color, and everything appears as a shade of that color. For a yellow LED candle, you see only shades of yellow, no reds, blues, or greens. This probably makes them unsuitable for reading cards, or any other activity where colors are important.

A related problem is that you can't put a yellow LED candle in a red holder and get red light. If you put a regular candle in a red glass, the glass filters out all of the colors except red, so you see red. Put a yellow LED candle in a red glass, and you get only a dull yellow, not red. Since the LED emits only yellow, there is no red to pass through the glass. Ditto for blue, green, and any color except yellow. Depending on how you do things, that might be a problem if, for example, you use colored quarter candles. It is possible to get LED candles that emit red, blue, green, and yellow light, but the ones I have seen are of lower quality, use throw-away batteries and not rechargeables, and are not very bright.

In spite of these limitations, the Smart Candle is a safe, useful alternative when an open flame is impossible or dangerous. They are bright, and flicker realistically. Used with rechargeable batteries, they are an environmentally responsible way to enjoy the beauty of candle light without the dangers of an open flame.
