Even on the ferry journey across the Cook strait from Wellington to Nelson the views were great-a sign of things to come. Once we got off the ferry in Nelson we drove west to Motueka where we planned on doing the Abel Tasman track. This is listed as on of NZ 'great walks' and the track is an easy enough walk which follows a path along the coast, passing little secluded beaches and forest along the way. We decided to do a three day tramp and camped along the way at different designated campsites. The weather was good for the first two days and then rained on day three-first bit of rain we've seen in about a month!. The first day we stopped at one of the little beaches for a swim and here we had our first introduction to sand flies, they were everywhere! I'll never complain about mosquitoes again-the sand flies just don't go away, even doused up with repellent they still keep flying around you! Along the walk there was plenty of lookouts and places to stop and take a rest-while the waking wasn't stressful,carrying the big rucksack was!
