I dont recall the temple name right off hand, but it was very informative. We had a chance to meditate, look at old traditional gold leaf paintings, view a Zen garden, drink a special green tea, and had some Buddhism history lessons. This video specifically shows the food offerings in front of the ihai (memorial tablet for the dead - the thing with all the kanji written on it), a golden painting to the side, statues of the Buddha and such, and a special room. The Japanese man talking is the Zen priest who will someday take over the temple from his father. The point of the ihai is to give the deceased ancestor a new name that can only be given specially from a temple. They receive new names because once they die, the ancestor is thought to "transform" into a new person, with a different personality, temperament, etc. Sometimes the ihai are good, sometimes not so good. The temple bases the ihai off of many things, such as what that person's status or ranking was in society, their relations with others (mother, father, sister, etc.) and their interests. Ihai's cost a lot of money so some Japanese people choose not to get one, but by getting one it is thought to help the spirit move on into their afterlife, thereby making it happy. Another interesting that's off-topic but kinda of interesting anyway is the "Obon" festival (held in summertime) that is held in Japan to honor the deceased ancestors.
