We took a room in the centre of the old town overlooking a pebble cobbled plaza with a daily flower market and a splashing, glinting fountain where Neptune and his sea nymphs capered. [Question: why is it bronze Neptunes can always find their tridents but never know where their clothes are?]. As we arrived the usually dull brown sandstone of the cathedral was turning apricot in the lowering sun and having had to stand on the train from Cordoba because of all the students returning to university didn't seem so onerous. We visited the cathedral the next morning. It does squat, towerless and rather troll-like, hemmed in by the growing modern city. The interior is starkly white, but light and airy, if a bit soulless - not helped by the giant dustsheets hiding the choir stalls and altar and the scaffolding filling the space under the dome. To add insult to austerity there are no votive candles - you drop a coin into the machine at the side chapel of your choice and an electric light lights up for your prayers. There is a collection of important but particularly ugly paintings, sadly in need of restoration (rather more than the ceiling it seemed), but the place is brightened up by some very pretty modern stained glass and some enormous ...
